Sharing with others

For the "sharing" part of this assignment i talked to a young boy who is a freshman in college. I talked to him about the dangers there are in sharing information on social networks such as facebook and giving out personal information on fraudulent emails. I alsos talked with him about internet gaming an dhow it can be something that takes over someone's life and make them feel like they are living an alternate reality. Overall the conversation went really well and i was surprised and how receptive and curious he was to all the information.

Internet Safety

After watching and reading the material online about internet safety i feel that i have learned that the internet can be a great tool. As long as we use it in the correct way. There are many warnings we recieve about the dangers of the interent. When i watched the video about identity theft it wasa shocking to learn about how many ways people can steal other's identities. Such as puttting thier real birthdate and name on internet sites such as facebook or using thier social security number on online applications. I wasn't aware that those two things could be so detrimental. Also there are many things that the brethern warn about. The Ensign article on gaming is importnat for young kids. Gaming can take over ones life and theye can spend more time on that then doing other uplifting important things. It can also be a dangerous place for youth as well. Even though the internet can be a danger to us it can also be used for good dthings as well. There are so many things that the church does to share information with members and dnon members a like. The talk on finding and sharing the gosple online was so touching and it is amazing how much knowledge there is that is good and uplifting at our finger tips.

IIC Competition Videos

The video I enjoyed the most from the IIC Competition videos was the "Lit2" video for the application on the i pad for early literacy. There were many things i liked about this idea. First of all i appreciated thier use of repition in teaching a child. There were many different ways in which a child could learn the target words. First the child read it. Then they heard it. Then they could select it and type in the missing words themselves. This game also seems fun for a child and let's face sometimes the only way to get a child to participate in something is to make it fun! I also like that the students downloaded the material from apple sine the I pad is not out yet. However the down side of that is that there is no way to see EXACTLY how it will look. It seems like these girls put a lot of thought, time and effort into thier project and I was very impressed by their presentation.

Multimedia Project

My idea for the multimedia project is a sample of what one of my students would create. Each would be given a choreographer who was influential in early period of modern dance. The student would research their modern dance pioneer and then create a movie showing different movement sequences specific to that choreographer. They would point out the elements that made their movement unique from other styles of modern dance. Then they would create their own original sequence based upon what they had learned.

This first rap song math video is great however, I'm not sure whether or not the song in the background is something that the teacher created on something like garage band but if it's not she is definitely breaking copyright because she does not site the song at all. If she created it herself then there is nothing stopping her from posting this on the internet!!!

The second movie the "Do You Know Movie" uses a song in the background that it never sites and it uses at least six minutes of it. I can imagine that that in probably more that 10% of the song or else the song would have to be over an hour long. Second it never sites where it received the information it was putting forth.

Copyright

I enjoyed learning about Copyright this week. I have never really understood the limitations of it and the instructional videos were very clear and helpful. After watching them the thing that i found most interesting was something that Sandra Day O'Connor said as a Supreme Court Justice I don't remember the exact way she said it but she explained that the purpose of copyright law isn't to protect the artist as much as it is to promote the use of others works to benefit the greater good of society and promote education! I love that we live in a country that values education!

Garage Band Song (artifact)

Garage Band song: I emailed my song to Daniel, had trouble putting it on my blog and want to meet with him.

Lesson Plan for Personal Technology Project

Lesson Plan:
"Teaching Rhythm, Tempo, and Dynamic Qualities of Music"

Terms:
TEMPO: Relative rapidity or rate of movement.
RHYTHM: The pattern of regular or irregular pulses.
DYNAMICS: Variation and gradation in the volume of musical sound.
ADAGIO: In a leisurely manner; slowly. (Remember to remind students that there is an "adagio" term in music that is different from the "adagio" term in dance. Explain the differences and similarities)
ALLEGRO: Brisk or rapid in tempo.
STACCATO: Fast, choppy, accented.

Warm Up:
8 counts for each:
Walking
Jogging
Running
Full Body Movement
Working through feet and Ankles
Working through upper extremities
Repeat the sequence twice. The second time 4 counts for each and then the third time 2 counts for each. Explain to students tempo never changed just the movement. (Can also do this same warm up a different time changing the movement qualities each time. Ex: fast running followed by slow walking)

First Activity:
Divide class into three groups give each group a different rhythm to clap as a group. Have each group try them separately and each group try them together. Ask them the things that they noticed about blending different rhythms and what kind of movement would go well with each pattern. Ex: slow movement, lyrical movement, staccato movement.

Across the floor activity:
Shifting accents:
Beat out on a dance drum a rhythm with a shifting tempo
Example beats on 1 and 5 then 2 and 6 then 3 and 7 then 4 and 8 then repeated.
Ask students why it would be important to have shifting accents in movement.
(It adds to the dynamic qualities of movement. Makes your dance more interesting. Shows that the choreographer has musical capabilities.)

Center floor activity:
Teach students 32 counts of movement
4 students up at a time while every one watches. Give each group of students and different song with different tempos and dynamic qualities. Ask students to adjust movement to fit the qualities of the different music they dance to. Ask students which ones they prefer, what they noticed about different groups, and what made the dances more interesting in choreography and emotion that came from each group.

Garage Band project: (group project 5 students to each group)
Requirements:
Song must be at least 90 seconds long
Must record a sound that has a constant rhythm (at one point in song doesn't have to be through the whole thing) that is created by you ex: clapping, snapping, tapping on a table or book.
Must use at least 2 sounds from the computer on the garage band application. (there are a lot to choose from)
Song must have at least three different feelings to it: Remember that different sounds and rhythms will create different feelings and emotions from an audience.
GOOD LUCK!! work well with your group!

The last part of my lesson plan (done on a different day) would be for students to choreograph movement to the song they created and share with the rest of the class.
Also have them write a response on: How movement and music work together. What qualities of music and movement work well together?

Personal Technology Projects

When doing the Internet communication assignment one thing that helped me very much were the tutorials that Brother West posted. Those saved me a lot of time and and helped things become less frustrating for me. I sometimes feel overwhelmed when i use new technologies. I wouldn't necessarily call myself a technology guru and i sometimes feel frustrated when i feel like I'm not understanding things. I thought that I would maybe do viddler for my personal project and i have found some tutorials that seem to be very helpful they are on this website: http://developers.viddler.com/category/tutorials/. I think it is important for students to be able to see themselves dance and also for teachers to be able to watch their students individually. This has helped me tremendously in my classes at BYU and i am excited to learn this skill and be able to offer it to my high school students.

Idea For Project

I am excited about the Personal Projects. I think being able to decide for ourselves what we want to learn is a great idea!!! As a dance instructor it is so important to learn how to edit and in some cases create our own music. This is something that I've always wanted to learn about but never really had the time or resources to learn! I hope that this will help me become more self sufficient and be able to help others with their music as well!

Creating Surveys For Your Class

This week i made a survey for my class website. One of the questions i asked was : How much dance training do you have? I think this is so important to know about your students especially when teaching in a public school setting. You get students in your beginning dance classes from all different levels. Some of them are not as advanced as others. It is importnat to be able to use these technologies so that you can help each student advance and learn and grow in your class no matter the varying levels they may be at. I remember filling these out when i was a student in high school and thinkink that it was pointless. Now as a teacher this is a great resource to me to be able to know what my students need and the activities they perfer doing in class. Each class can be unique and different!

Dance Performances Use Technology

This weekend i had the opportunity to see "Dance in Concert" at BYU that was put on by the Dancer's Company. I am in a dance productions class this semester and my assignment was to watch the performance and talk about the performance quality as far as the technical aspects of the show: lighting, props, ect. While i was watching i thought to myself that using technology in dance doesn't JUST mean using a computer or the internet. It's a lot of different things. Like learning how to mix music with tools like garage band or learning how to work a circut board for lighting a stage. There is so much to learn but i am grateful for the technological advances in our day that make it possible for us to enrich our lives!

Benefits Of Dance

My idea comes this week from one of my Google reader pages called Dance Advantage. This was a post by Vicki Nelson who is a mom of three girls who grew up dancing. Two of her girls are graduated from college and one is not far from graduating herself. She talks about how her three girls grew up dancing but since college they have all stopped. She asks the question so now is it all a waste of time and energy spent in their younger years on something they don't participate in anymore? The answer to her is NO!! OF COURSE NOT!!! She then goes on to talk about all the things her girls learned through dance that impacted their life. to name just a few: CREATIVITY!! PASSION!! DISCIPLINE!!! I love Vicki's appreciation for what her daughters have learned and appreciate the fact that she would feel so deeply about it that she would share it with others!

MY GOOGLE READER

Hi everyone! For my Google reader blogs i have chosen:
* Dance Education Tips From the Trenches
* Dance Outlook: The ABC's of Ballet Steps, Performances, and Legends
*Dancing into the Future: Dance and Technology Archives
* Department of Dance- Technology
*National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Official Page Notes
* Utah Dance Education Organization Facebook
*Dance Advantage
I decided to add these blogs because they seemed to be the most helpful out of all the ones i looked at. I added NDEO blog and UDEO blog because they are so important to be involved with especially as Dance Educators. All of my professors at BYU strongly encourage becoming members of these organizations because they help bring awareness to the importance of dance in education and how we can be dance advocates. I also liked the dance advantage blog because it talked about Dance in a studio setting. Although as Dance Education Majors we plan to be teaching more so in the public school setting you never know whether or not you may end up in a studio setting....so be prepared!!!!

How can we use twitter as teachers?

I am taking an advanced English class this semester and one of the requirements for the class is to make a twitter account and to follow our professor. She uses Twitter to answer questions of her students they may have about an assignment or reading that is due. As a class we also use Twitter to help with group projects. At first i thought that signing up for twitter was going to be a drag and to be honest I did not want to make an account. However, it has been very helpful and i am glad that it was an assignment. This is a great example of how we can use Twitter in our classrooms. it really can be a great resource!

ME & TECHNOLOGY

I am very excited to be able to take this class and learn how i can use technology to help me teach the art of dance. I don't have a ton of experience in this area and i am anxous to learn more. I think technology is important to use in our class rooms because there is so much available to us. We can use technology to expand our knowledge on certain subjects and in dance, to help us create and enhance our art. I hope to learn about different technologies that will enhance the learning of my students and myself as well!!
